The Sensirion SHT25 humidity and temperature sensor is a tiny (3x3 mm) chip that can be controlled by an I2C connection. The Devantech USB-I2C module adds an I2C channel to a PC. In LabVIEW this I2C channel can be addressed as a COM port. But this COM port does not supply a 'transparent' I2C connection; you have to communicate with the USB-I2C module in order to communicate with the humidity sensor.

Programming principle

The driver uses VISA functions to communicate to the assigned COM port for the I2C channel.

All communication with the humidity sensor is directed to the USB-I2C module first. This is true both for communication to and from the humidity sensor.

In case of sending a message (command) to the humidity sensor, the USB-I2C has to receive a constructed message which is wrapped around the message that has to be send to humidity sensor.

In case of receiving a message (response request) from the humidity sensor, the USB-I2C will preceed that message with x01, which indicates that the message was received as expected. This implies that on a request of X characters from the humidity sensor, X+1 characters have to be read from the USB-I2C module.

The following overview shows (some of) the commands that can be send to the humidity sensor and how they should be implemented using the USB-I2C module:

(1) The 7-bit I2C device address of the humidity sensor is b1000|000. The direction bit for 'write' is 0, hence the full I2C header is b1000|0000 or x80.

(2) x53 is the I2C_SGL (read/write single byte) command of the USB-I2C module. x55 is the I2C_AD1 (read/write single or multiple bytes) command of the USB-I2C module.

(3) x54 is the I2C_MUL (read multiple bytes) command of the USB-I2C module. x81 is the full I2C header for 'read'.

In general there must be a short delay between each command and response request.

Test Program

The test program (screenshot below) reads both the humidity and the temperature at a speed of 1 reading per second. It flashes the red LED on the USB-I2C module after each reading. The test program allows to select a different combination of conversion resolutions and to perform a 'soft reset'.

The settings of the IO pins on the USB-I2C module are read at the start of the program and displayed as IO pins (initialy).

The user register is read at the start of the program and each time after the conversion resolution has been changed.

Remarks

• The driver has been created with LabVIEW 2012 SP 1.
• The driver implements only the 'no hold master' measurement commands.
• The driver doesn't support reading the analog input ports (since those can't be read while using the I2C functionality of the USB-I2C module).
• Flashing the red LED on the USB-I2C module doesn't involve communication with the humidity sensor.
• The USB-I2C module has 5 V output that should be regulated to 3.3 V for the humidity sensor.
• The temperature and humidity measurements come with a checksum. The driver doesn't perform checksum validation.
